Your Wallpaper Is Bored. We Fixed That.

Your Wallpaper Is Bored. We Fixed That.

Think about the last time you glanced at your lock screen. Maybe you were checking the time, or silencing a notification, or just picking up your phone for no reason at all. Whatever the reason, you saw the same wallpaper you've had for the last three months. It looked fine. It always looks fine. But "fine" isn't exactly exciting.

That's the problem Zedge set out to solve with two brand-new content types: 24 Hour Wallpapers and Dual Wallpapers. Both launched on Zedge for Android, and the early results were striking enough that we want to share what we built and why.

A Wallpaper That Pays Attention to the Clock

A 24 Hour Wallpaper isn't just one image. It's four: the same scene, transformed across morning, afternoon, evening, and night to reflect how it would actually look at each time of day.

A city skyline waking up with dawn commuters, blazing with noon glare, glowing with office-tower lights after dark. A coffee cup that starts empty in the morning, fills up, empties again by evening. A sunflower that tracks the light across the day, petals wide open at noon and curled in at midnight. A neighborhood street that's quiet and misty at 6am, busy at lunch, golden in the late afternoon, and lit by streetlamps at night.

The transitions happen automatically in the background via Android's WallpaperManager. Users don't have to do anything except notice that their phone looks different at 7pm than it did at 7am.

The Wallpaper That Turns Every Unlock into a Reveal

Dual Wallpapers take a different approach. Instead of changing with time, they change with context: specifically, the moment you go from lock screen to home screen.

Two wallpapers, one paired experience. The lock screen shows one image; the home screen shows another. When those two images tell a story together, the unlock moment becomes a little event.  Every time, a tiny surprise.

Artists upload both images as a single paired submission. Users get both when they choose the wallpaper. Simple in concept, but the creative range it opens up is enormous.

What Happened When We Tried It

We launched both content types as a trial to see how creators and users would respond before committing to a full rollout.

The response was immediate. Within 30 days, artists uploaded more than 2,000 new items across both content types. Creators, it turns out, were waiting for exactly this kind of challenge. Content that requires a bit more thought, more craft, more storytelling is catnip for talented artists who've been designing static wallpapers for years.

On the user side, 24 Hour Wallpapers drove 8% of total item unlocks. An in-app campaign promoting the feature converted 54% more. The data told us people don't just tolerate wallpapers that change; they engage with them more.

Dual Wallpapers are still building catalog depth as more creators submit paired content, but early signals point in the same direction.

What's Next

Both content types are available on Zedge. Check our dedicated tabs in the app and see what the artists created.

And if you're a creator reading this: the bar for what a wallpaper can be just got a lot more interesting. We'd love to see what you make.
